The Trout Gulch vineyard sits 800’ above the tiny town of Aptos, about 4 miles from the ocean in Santa Cruz County. The site was planted in 1980 to the old Wente clone of Chardonnay, which many consider to be the heritage selection of Chardonnay in California. The soils in this cool-climate site are sandy loam, and Richard Alfaro carefully tends the vines.
Organic methods are used in this dry-farmed site with 35-year-old Wente clone Chardonnay. The wine spends Ten months in neutral French oak

The 2021 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is a model of precision and class. Pure and crystalline, the 2021 is superb. I would give it a few years to settle down, but all the elements are in place. Lemon peel, chalk, mint, white flowers, sage and crushed rocks abound in this striking, riveting Chardonnay. The 2021 is just pristine. This is what Trout Gulch Chardonnay is all about.
