It is widely considered the "benchmark" for dry Madeira in the United States. It was designed to recreate the style of the refined, bone-dry Madeiras favored by 18th-century Charlestonians.
Nose: Complex aromas of orange peel, dried white flowers, beeswax, and walnuts. Some critics note secondary scents of gingerbread, clove, and a flinty, "matchstick" quality.
Palate: It feels powerful yet delicate, often described as "salted caramel without the sugar". You’ll likely find flavors of dried apple, tangerine, and pineapple, with a distinctive saline (salty) finish.
As the driest entry in the Historic Series, it is defined by a high, "lip-smacking" acidity that masks its roughly 1% residual sugar.
Composition: A blend of at least 85% Sercial grapes with a small portion of very old Tinta Negra wines (up to 60 years old) to add depth and complexity.
Temperature: Serve it slightly chilled (50–55°F) to emphasize its crispness and aroma.
Aperitif: Traditionally served with salted nuts, olives, or a simple salad with shavings of fresh Parmesan.
Main Courses: Its high acidity makes it one of the few wines that can stand up to creamy or fatty soups like
French Onion, Chestnut, or Lobster Bisque.
Bold Pairings: It is famously versatile; it has been successfully paired with wild boar and hearty, savory meat dishes.
