A highly-regarded, medium-rich Madeira from the oldest company in the Madeira wine trade. It is known for its balance of intense sweetness and bright acidity, often described as having a "round and mellow" character with smoky complexity.
Flavor Highlights: Expect a rich bouquet of prunes, almonds, and vanilla, with layers of toffee, honey, and raisin. Some tasters also note nuances of dried fig, orange zest, and roasted dates.
Body & Finish: It has a medium-rich body with a "long and pleasantly persistent finish," driven by its characteristic high acidity which prevents it from being cloying.
Style: Medium-rich (or medium-sweet). Bual is the "middle" grape in the Madeira spectrum, sweeter than Sercial and Verdelho but less so than Malmsey.
Aging: Aged for 10 years in American oak casks using the traditional Canteiro system. This process involves placing casks in the hottest upper lofts of lodges in Funchal and gradually moving them to cooler lower floors as they stabilize.
The Producer: Cossart Gordon & Co. was established in 1745. They are considered specialists in the Bual grape variety.
