PIEDMONTE
Brovia Barbera d'Alba Ciabot del Fi 2015
Nose shows a bit of wood influence still, not clean yet, will be racked. With air graphite and balsamic aromas emerge along with a little hazelnut nuttiness on nose. Already has a lovely texture with less power and fruity fat than the regular Barbera. There's more floral character and a tauter nature to the wine, lovely layered clay notes on the palate, leaves the palate clean and fresh with some mineral notes on the finish. This is what super Barbera should be, such snap on the finish, not fair to score out of barrel but seemingly better than the base. Showing incipient balsamic and India ink flavors with fine sweet/tart balance and persistence to the notably fresh fruit flavors.

Brovia Barolo Unio 2014
Evaluating the 2014 Barolo "Unio" blind, one would be hard-pressed to declare it from anything less than a stellar vintage. Brovia's late-round strategy of assembling one great wine paid off enormously, and the end result is not just good, it is shockingly gorgeous. The nose soars, laden with the beautiful, complex, almost philosophical spice of great Nebbiolo, and anchored by dark, savory fruits. "Unio" is a densely-boned fighter whose musculature makes up in definition what it lacks in size. The vintage's lightness is felt not in any sense of dilution but in a sense of mesmerizing clarity the kind of clear-eyed freshness that the heft of riper vintages sometimes masks. In the absence of excess flesh, the wine's profound minerality is positively arresting, reading as chiseled and foundational rather than as an undertone or a grace note. Furthermore, the family's remarkable feel for well-judged extraction is on full display here, as the tannins are as perfect as could be imagined neither coerced past their natural potential nor buffed into insignificance. They are downright sexy tannins, in fact the lower-lip bite at the end of a kiss that manages to be both tender and suggestive.

Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2012
The Mauro Mascarello family MONPRIVATO vineyard is located in the village of Castiglione Falletto, and is a classic prime medium-hillside site stretching over six hectares (15 acres) at 280 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Barolo wine-growing area. It is historic vineyard, as is confirmed by old land registry archives dating back to 1666. The soils of Monprivato, coupled with the haunting refinement found in Nebbiolo Michét, produce one of the most compellingly complex and elegant interpretations of Barolo to be found. With bottle age Monprivato produces a beautiful, red fruity, truffley and soil-driven Barolo, redolent also of autumnal notes and roses. For four generations the winemaking style of the Mascarellos has followed a traditional approach that allows for the brilliant underlying terroir of all of their wines, and Monprivato in particular, to take center stage.
