Domaine Isle Saint Pierre Rose 2017We discovered the Isle Saint Pierre wines through our friends Karina and Guillaume Lefevre of Domaine du Sulauze, home of the famed Pomponette Pink! Isle Saint-Pierre is a small island in the middle of the Rhône river, located 25km south of Arles and 15km away from the Mediterranean in the heart of the Camargue region. In 1927, Parisian wine merchant Pierre Chassaing founded Domaine Isle Saint-Pierre and devoted himself to cultivating vines and raising sheep. A few vines remains from that time, together with a flock of 200 sheep that provides the manure needed to nourish the vines. The proximity to the water means that the island enjoys a coastal climate (with a cooling influence from the nearby bodies of water) and deep, well draining sedimentary soils comprised of sand and silt. Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2012The Mauro Mascarello family MONPRIVATO vineyard is located in the village of Castiglione Falletto, and is a classic prime medium-hillside site stretching over six hectares (15 acres) at 280 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Barolo wine-growing area. It is historic vineyard, as is confirmed by old land registry archives dating back to 1666. The soils of Monprivato, coupled with the haunting refinement found in Nebbiolo Michét, produce one of the most compellingly complex and elegant interpretations of Barolo to be found. With bottle age Monprivato produces a beautiful, red fruity, truffley and soil-driven Barolo, redolent also of autumnal notes and roses. For four generations the winemaking style of the Mascarellos has followed a traditional approach that allows for the brilliant underlying terroir of all of their wines, and Monprivato in particular, to take center stage.

Indeed, the Moulin is a very pleasing wine from its earliest years, an "easy-to-drink" wine. Then, at the time of the blend tasting, one chooses the supple, round, gourmand (tasty, flavoursome, mouthfilling...) wines. Quite often, the wines born of young grapevines are best suited. The Moulin is also a little richer in Merlot than the Chateau, about 40%. This is also Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. To give the wine a melted woody taste, barrelling includes 30% to 40% new wood, and lasts 12 months.
