The Rugiens (1.07 ha) are located mid hill on the southern slopes, in between Pommard and Volnay. The ground, where both marlstone and clay can be found, is composed of a wide variety of soil. The superior part of the plot has a light (0.2m) soil of marlstone while the inferior part is reddish-brown and deeper (0.8-1m). The land is east facing. The vines are all around 60 years of age. The wines produced are spicy; sweet spices such as cloves. The wines, which are fine and very aerial, are both elegant and concentrated. The tannins, the aromas of blackberry and very ripe raspberry enhance a long finish. To be served at 15°C.

Wine SpectatorTightly wound and linear, with sandalwood, sweet spice and cedar notes accenting the cherry and strawberry flavors. Complex and dense, but will need time to unwind. Excellent length. Best from 2016 through 2028. 75 cases imported.

Wine AdvocateTasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens '11 has quite an intense, slightly tinny bouquet with tart red cherries, orange zest and damp earthy aromas. The definition is quite impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with bold and assertive tannins and there is real weight in the mouth. It is endowed with plenty of oak, although there is as much fruit tannin as wood on the austere finish. Difficult to see which way this will head, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt and suggest giving time for it to coalesce.
